The High Tech Crimes Unit is comprised of the Internet Crimes Unit and the Technological Services Unit. The Internet Crimes Unit investigates and prosecutes computer-facilitated crime committed in Monmouth County. The Unit is a member of the New Jersey Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force and works closely with the New Jersey State Police, the New Jersey Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory (NJRCFL), the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), and other state and federal agencies in combating online child predation and other computer-facilitated crimes.
The mission of the Task Force is to combat electronically facilitated crime, especially Internet child predation and the possession and distribution of items depicting the sexual exploitation or abuse of a child. Task Force operations are ongoing. Local law enforcement officers who join the Task Force work with the Bureau approximately 1 to 2 days per week for a period of six months, whereby they are exposed to the workings of the Bureau and specifically trained to investigate referrals from NCMEC.
In 2023, the ICAC Task Force continued its mission that was initially launched in 2010 and greatly expanded its partnerships with law-enforcement agencies in Monmouth County that joined the Task Force. The Task Force is now comprised of members of the MCPO High Tech Crimes Unit and the police departments in Aberdeen, Bradley Beach, Highlands, Holmdel, Keyport, Manalapan, Neptune City, Ocean Township, Spring Lake, Spring Lake Heights, Tinton Falls, and Wall Township, as well as U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
The Internet Crimes Unit consists of an Assistant Prosecutor, a Lieutenant, a Sergeant, three Detectives, and a Prosecutor’s Agent. As the caseload for the Unit has greatly increased, additional Assistant Prosecutors are also assigned to assist with cases.
